Young Dairy Producer Initiative

Young Dairy Producer Conference
Achieves Record Attendance
Bowling Green, KY- The Kentucky Dairy Development Council hosted the Third Annual Young Dairy Producer Initiative Conference Feb. 4-6th, with more than 75 dairy producers and industry representatives in attendance. The focus of this years conference was on value-added dairy businesses, labor management, the economic impact of dairy in Kentucky, remodeling economically, cow comfort and feed management.
One of the most beneficial parts of the conference according to Travis Smith of Shelbyville is “Being able to talk with other producers and encourage each other. Knowing you’re not in this by yourself and building networks and friendships with dairymen across the state.” Smith also added that Dr. Britt’s presentation was very beneficial. He discussed how to increase production efficiently by improving cow comfort, pushing up feed and keeping feed available to cows – these are things that are low cost and add great benefit.
Producers who participated in the conference will have the opportunity to go to the World Dairy Expo in September as well as touring some Wisconsin dairies. If you are a young producer or know someone that may be interested in the YDPI please contact your local dairy consultant.
Special thanks to the Agriculture Development Board for their support and funding of the YDPI. Also thanks to sponsors GEA- WestfaliaSurge, Farm Credit Services and the Kentucky Department of Agriculture for making this year’s conference possible.
